team fortress classic and half-life death match come pre-installed with half-life 1016.

STEP 1: INSTALLING HALF LIFE 1005

download and install half-life 1005 basic.
when the installation asks you to update, click "no".

STEP 2: UPGRADING HALF LIFE 1005 TO 1016

download and install half-life 1016 upgrader.
choose "c:\sierra\half-life" as the setup folder.

STEP 3: INSTALLING COUNTER STRIKE BETA 6.1

download and install counter-strike beta 6.1.
choose "c:\sierra\half-life\" as the setup folder.

STEP 4: CONNECTING TO CS BETA 6.1 SERVERS

start half-life then press "esc" twice to bypass start-up animations.
go to: "custom game" -> "counter-strike beta 6.1" -> "activate" and click "done".
go to: "multiplayer" -> "internet games " and click "cancel" if it asks you to update.
a "logging on to won..." messsage will appear for about 60 seconds.
go to: "add server" and enter the ip:port of the server.

SOME USEFUL COMMANDS

"rate 25000" will set your rates to lan quality.
"room_type 0" eliminates the annoying echo sound in game.
"cl_hidefrags 0" allows you to see other players scores, it doesn't always work immediately.
"fps_modem 72" sets your frames per second to the maximum possible.
"r_netgraph 1" shows your net graph and fps, the maximum is 72 fps.
